ANPPCAN reintegrates a child imprisoned with her mum.
At 2 years, Susan (not real name) was among 15 other children living with their mothers in Arua prison. Susan was born in a family of four in Lobule Village, Kambura Parish, Ayivuni sub-county in Arua district. As fate would have it, she is the only surviving child of the four.
19 months ago, the Mother was apprehended and remanded in Arua prison on murder charges of killing her own son (Susan’s brother). In a circumstance that she never expected, Margaret (suzan’s mother) beat her son while disciplining him. Unfortunately three days later he developed medical complications and while being rushed to a health centre, he died.
Margaret was arrested, charged before the high court and was sent on remand. Margaret being the only parent available, she had to follow her to prison. Like any other child imprisoned with their parents, Suzan lacked all the basic needs like adequate feeding, proper medical care, early childhood education and development.
