By Eunice Anek
As the rest of the nation gathered in Masindi to celebrate the Day of the African Child last week, ANPPCAN Uganda joined over 2,000 people to commemorate the day in the northern district of Kitgum.
The celebrations which were held in Kitgum-Matidi Sub County saw 120 children immunized, essay competitions for primary schools organized as well as a soccer tournament for primary schools. Layamo P/S walked away with a he-goat after overpowering their rivals, Matidi Primary in the soccer match.
The essay competition saw several children from upper primary participate and several topics written about the day’s theme which was; Accelerated Child Survival and Development. The best essaywas from Potuke primary and this earned the school scholastic materials such as pens, books, pencils and school bags from ANPPCAN Uganda.
Drawing competitions were also organized and these mainly attracted pupils from lower primary. The participants had to make drawings focusing on what they wanted to become in future, pupils of Onyaa primary emerged winners thus getting scholastic materials and their school was selected to hold a radio talk show on child abuse and neglect courtesy of ANPPCAN. The day was also coloured with entertainment from the various community groups which performed drama about child survival and presented traditional dances.
ANPPCAN also organized community sensitization rallies in the Kitgum-Matidi, Parewch Alango, Pagwa Aware and Boby-B which were attended by over 500 residents. The rallies focused on child survival and development.
